I walked out of the room immediately to change it, and a different check-in desk person said dismissively and immediately that there were no other rooms available.
#ONYX HOTEL BOSTON REVIEW GENERATOR#
We got an absolutely terrible room on the second floor that was directly next to the power generator – which, of course meant that the room was shaking and noisy.

We were two Diamond Hilton customers and there was basically no recognition of that even though we confirmed our status with the check-in desk.
#ONYX HOTEL BOSTON REVIEW FULL#
Essentially, that means they don’t have to provide any services like at a full brand Hilton or Hampton Inn. It was clear that this hotel did not have the brand standards of a Kimpton, and so went for one of these independent brands with Hilton. Typing the name "Onyx" into any GPS will bring you to the Kimpton, but it’s now a Hilton hotel. The first thing that I should say is that I assume that this hotel was previously a Kimpton property. Overall, the service here is subpar and so are the rooms. If you are looking to be pampered or hang out at your hotel, you may want to spend a little more for full service treatment.A friend and I stayed at the Onyx Hotel while we were overnighting in Boston. If you are just looking for a place to sleep while you explore Boston this is a great option. With the exception of the first initial encounter with the front desk staff and bartender preparing for an event, the remainder of the crew were friendly and accommodating.

In addition, the lobby requires room key to re-enter after certain hours, which made me feel safe. The lobby offers bicycles to check out (we didn't because we ran out of time). It was inconvenient because I was in the middle of changing when she came, which meant I had to get dressed quickly to let her in. Also, room service had to come in and check our mini bar after our arrival because it hadn't been checked before we checked in. It only took her a minute, but I was annoyed that she didn't offer to do so initially. I told her I'd have to log in to my email to find it and asked if she couldn't look it up for me, which she then did, but she seemed to be put out to have to do so. Upon arrival I mentioned I had signed up for Karma awards and the front desk clerk asked me if I could look up my account number. If you are looking for a traditional full service hotel, this is not the place for you. We finally had to get someone at the front desk to accommodate us. At one time we waited in the lobby/bar for 20 minutes while the bartender was busy vacuuming and getting ready for an evening event, and never once did he ask if he could help us. The service in the lobby/bar was only available before certain hours upon request. The best thing in this hotel was the complimentary fruit infused water in the lobby, available 24/7. Considering we were on vacation coffee would have been nice until noon. The complimentary coffee was punctually removed by 10am each morning. The body soap and shampoo dispensers equipped in the showers were empty during our entire stay. There isn't much in the way of views at this hotel and amenities were minimal. Also, coming from Texas it was a little more cramped than rooms in the south. The room was clean and well kept for the duration of our stay (with the exception of sheets, which my husband spilled some food on the bed and the sheets remained dirty the remainder of our 4 day stay). While the location is not directly in the hustle and bustle of popular tourist areas, it is only a few blocks walk to Union Oyster house and the green/orange lines of the MBTA Haymarket exit. If I was here on business- I would stay here all the time- location is excellent and the room is perfect for the solo traveler.Ĭonsidering that all hotels in downtown Boston are extremely overpriced, this hotel was well worth the price. There was always a doorman who also acted as the valet for parking or assisted with baggage. The staff and front desk were attentive and assisted whenever asked. The restaurant in the hotel was quite good and would rate between $$$ and $$$$. Plenty of restaurants surround this hotel. The room was small- but typical of the downtown area. The room was on the upper floors and was decorated quite nicely. That saved us boarding our three dachshunds since there was no charge for them to stay with us. This hotel was a block away and had valet parking for $47 per night. We needed to be at the Boston Garden at 7:30AM for the start of our son's UMass graduation and were unsure whether we would have made it there on time fighting Boston's notorious traffic. Compared to the other hotels in downtown Boston, this place was a bargain for the date needed.
